Our First Homeschool Curriculum

by | Nov 10, 2022 | Each Little Moment Blog

I did a thing. I bought our first curriculum EVER for the start in our homeschool journey.  I used to teach toddlers and pre-school and I always planned on doing my own thing for pre-school. I am also a huge proponent of play-based learning and do not believe that a formal curriculum is necessary this early on. Oh and yes, I know my daughter is not even three yet. So why on earth did I already purchase homeschool curriculum?

Over the last two years I have had the amazing privilege of working for a homeschool curriculum company, My Father’s World. It has been such a blessing to have flexible work, from home and to also be a part of a ministry in encouraging families and walking alongside of them in their homeschooling journey. I have been able to witness, first-hand, the heart behind the company, the many families that just GUSH about their curriculum, and the curriculum itself.

My Father’s World has complete curriculum from pre-school up through 12th grade and they TRULY care about the families that are using them. They desire to equip families to give their children a solid biblical foundation AND 50% of the proceeds actually go to bring God’s Word to all. I think the heart behind what a company does speaks volumes, and their mission is one that I fully stand behind.  The curriculum is also comprised of every component that I would desire in a program. The Bible is thoroughly integrated throughout multiple subjects, rather than just a separate subject.  It also has a global focus and thorough studies of history and government; which are all priorities for my husband and I.

The co-founder of My Father’s World, Marie Hazell, is  speech and language specialist with a master’sdegree and teaching credentials, using both her experience in the classroom and homeschol parent she and her husband work together to develop My Father’s World for homeschools and classrooms. This curriclum combines the best of Charlotte Mason’s ideas, classical education, and unit studies (and the afor mentioned Biblical and global focus). My Father’s World is designed for the entire family in mind (whether that is teaching one or multiple children), with one primary teacher’s manual for all the subjects, and using excellent literature throughout all grades. Learn more about their approach here.

A lot of this comes into play more in the older grades, but it something I am hoping to continue in as our homeschooling journey progresses.  As I am spending time with families and talking about their experience with the curriculum, my excitement to use the curriculum has only increased. The preschool program, All Aboard the Animal Train, has a very gentle approach that does not take very much time in the day and lays the foundation for learning while focusing on hand-on activities (art, music, sensory play, and more), plenty of time reading, outdoor play, and teaching bible stories and character traits. I will share more about the specific curriculum in a later post, but each of these aspects are things that I desire to incorporate into the time that I spend with my daughter during the day.

In this busy season, I have found it a little difficult to get myself organized and take advantage of the time we have and the all-inclusive, pre-planned curriculum makes it so simple. Since Isa is young we are taking a very gentle approach and have started using some of the materials; we have not formally started the lessons but plan to start sometime in January. I still firmly believe that you do not need a full curriculum for preschool and you can create many opportunities to lay a great foundation and love for learning. But if you are in a similar place that I am in and have the ability to invest in a preschool curriculum (or have older children and any of these qualities stand out to you) I strongly encourage you to look more into My Father’s World. I also know families that do not homeschool, but still use resources from My Father’s World to supplement and teach their children at home.
